Detailed description
Picture "Landscape I" (1971)
Gerhard Richter's landscape paintings constitute an independent body of works and hold a prominent position in his oeuvre. Significant for these motifs is the historical reflection that runs through the artist's entire oeuvre. For Richter, the Romantic style continues to be of great relevance, with none other than Caspar David Friedrich as the inspiration for his landscapes.
During his studies in Dresden, Gerhard Richter acquainted himself with the works of the great Romantic artist. Like Caspar David Friedrich, Richter's landscapes are characterised by a composition that situates the main motif in the lower third of the image space, with the sky dominating through a low-set horizon.
Richter's compositions are typically based on his own photographs, which appear intentionally unplanned and accidental. His "Landscapes" are based on photographs he took as early as 1969 and published as editions two years later. The narrow lines framing each picture give the sheet a decorative character and contrast strongly with the picture motif.
Coloured heliogravure on light cardboard, 1971. 100 copies, numbered (10/100), signed and dated. Motif size 20.4 x 13.6 cm. Sheet size 50.5 x 40 cm. Size in frame 57 x 46 cm as shown.
