Heiner Meyer: Hommage to Picasso

Heiner Meyer is one of the fathers of German pop art. His latest series - created exclusively for ARTES - is a tribute to the greatest artist of modernism: Pablo Picasso.

Picasso's ceramics reinterpreted

In the summer of 1946, Pablo Picasso visited the Madoura ceramics workshop in Vallauris for the first time and only left after he had created three sculptures there - the initial spark for his work of ceramics, which comprises around 4,000 pieces.

In his homage, contemporary artist Heiner Meyer quotes Picasso's ceramics and expands his oeuvre of motifs with pop-cultural phenomena and comic figures.

The “Homage to Picasso” series was created exclusively for ARTES.

Picasso created vases, jugs, plates and bowls based on antique models, for the painting of which he developed his own cheerful visual language.

Heiner Meyer adopts the formal characteristics of Picasso's ceramics. The pieces are given their own stamp by Meyer's typical comic culture motifs.

Picasso's prominent portraits are also echoed in Heiner Meyer's homage.

Heiner Meyer takes up Picasso's typical cubist deconstruction and creates new pictorial worlds that make their original reference clear and yet convey a very unique aesthetic.
